Kicking Computers Doesn't Work

How many of us have a computer? How many love their computer? Who gets really frustrated with their computers? Some people say that we should love our computers, and not get frustrated because even if it is slow, and not doing everything we want, it is still a great gift that we have that allows us to do many things. Without computers, access to the largest data base (the internet) is not possible, and typewriters would be used, and information would be in books, etc. So they say we should be grateful even for slow, run down, ugly looking computers.
Some people just kick their computer. I mean, it sounds logical right? It doesn't work the way we want it to, and if I'm mad at it, then it deserves to be kicked, yelled at, called bad names, or talked about poorly. They say that this method will work because the computer is not doing what we want it to, and if it doesn't look the way we want it to, then it should know how we feel.

Ok....this second opinion sounds crazy, right? We all know that kicking a computer will do NO good, and will only make things worse! WE ALL KNOW THIS. Nothing good comes from kicking the computer or saying mean things about it, or being mad at it all the time. We know it is a wonderful gift, and that it helps us in so many ways.

Now, I want us to think about how we feel about ourselves. Yep, you know where I'm going with this. How many of us know that our bodies, our minds, our emotions, our abilities are all wonderful gifts? Yet, how many of us kick ourselves, and are mad, say mean things (even if its just in our minds), put ourselves down for not doing things good enough, or are mad about the way we look. I am here to tell you that "kicking computers doesn't work!!!"

The Lord has given us wonderful gifts of our bodies. We need to love our bodies, be nice/positive/grateful to ourselves. Being mad we are not pretty enough, don't have the same body as the next person, haven't developed habits like "Mrs. Perfect," or even aren't doing everything we know to be right....so being mad about these things and "kicking ourselves" won't help!!!

The Lord teaches us to:

  • Love:
    • Mosiah 23:15  "Thus did Alma teach his people, that every man should love his neighbor as himself, that there should be no contention among them."
    • As we love ourselves, this will also come true, that the  contention and anger toward ourselves will leave. We can start having peace and love in our hearts.
  • Be Grateful
    • Alma 34:38 "That ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves...and that ye live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you."
    • We have so many things to be grateful for about ourselves and about our bodies.
  • Be Positive
    • Elder Cook, in April 2012 Gen Conference said: "Our doctrine is clear; we are to be positive and of good cheer."
    • Being positive about the past and the future will change our lives, and our minds! As we don't kick ourselves, but tell ourselves all the good we can do, and have potential to do, we (unlike computers) will progress and grow into becoming even better. (Just like the seed in Alma 32 becoming a beautiful tree)
Good luck! Enjoy this week! Love yourself! Because, I could teach you all the health tips in the world, but until we stop "kicking the computer" they won't help.

So be grateful for all you have, especially your body, no matter what you don't like about it, just think where you'd be without it! Be positive about what is happening! Stop yourself before you kick yourself!
